School of Good Taste
It’s not every Saturday that my most fashionable friend says to me, “Let’s go to Macy’s.”
In this case, it wasn’t to peruse the aisles in the young contemporary designer section (thankfully), but to attend a cheese and wine course hosted by award winning author Laura Werlin at the De Gustibus Cooking School on the 8th Floor. The class was based on her new book, Laura Werlin’s Cheese Essentials, and took us through the 8 styles of cheese and appropriate (read: delicious) wine pairings.
Besides learning how to entertain with cheese and wine, we sampled some of Werlin’s recipes for easy-to-prepare appetizers such as Brie Toasts with Chardonnay-Soaked Golden Raisins.
Co-founded in 1980 by Arlene Feltman Sailhac, the cooking school boasts a roster of star chefs including Emeril Lagasse, Bobby Flay, Mario Batali and even Alain Ducasse. Many of them taught classes here long before their runaway success on the Food Network or their international acclaim as the world’s top chefs. Luckily for us, they still make time to visit the school now and again.
Next on the events calendar? De Gustibus is hosting two classes not to be missed by anyone who aspires to host unforgettable parties at home.
Tuesday, November 6, 2007 5:30 to 8:00 PM
Michael McCarty, owner of the legendary Michael’s New York and Michael’s Santa Monica, and author of Welcome to Michael’s: Great Food, Great People, Great Party, along with executive chef Robert Ribant, will prepare the perfect dinner party for eight. Known for his great charisma, McCarty has catered to the media elite in Manhattan for over 20 years. His power lunch scene (think Vera Wang, George Lucas, Melania Trump, Graydon Carter) is documented each Wednesday in a column in Mediabistro called Lunch at Michael’s.
Thursday, November 15, 2007 5:30 to 8:00 PM
Adam Perry Lang, owner and executive chef of Daisy May’s BBQ USA and Daisy May Street Carts, classically trained, having worked at restaurants like Daniel, Chanterelle, and Guy Savoy, will demonstrate how to be the ultimate grill master. Home grilling, be it indoors or outside, is a great way to entertain. His secrets for rubs, marinades, and spices will be revealed as well as a few of his favorite, delectable side dishes.
My advice, go hungry. This is one school where eating and drinking in class are required!
De Gustibus is located at Macy’s Herald Square, 151 West 34th Street, 8th Floor. Classes are $90 per person. To register and preview the schedule, visit the De Gustibus web site or call 212-439-1714.
