Life of the Party
Colin Cowie knows how to party. He is a celebrity event planner and a lifestyle expert. Did we mention a friend of Oprah’s too? His extraordinary events for Hollywood elite, New York society, heads of state and even royalty have made him one of the world’s most sought after event planners. But, for someone who lives in the fast (and fabulous) lane, Cowie is remarkably down to earth. Inspired by his latest book, Colin Cowie Chic – A Guide to Life as it Should Be, the charismatic entertainer gives Notes on a Party some tips on how to live well on any budget.
What is your secret to stylish and effortless entertaining?
Entertaining has nothing to do with spending large amounts of cash or impressing people. It’s about creating memories and moments that your friends and family will cherish. Your guests are there to enjoy being with you, and they are grateful you invited them in the first place.
Create a relaxed friendly atmosphere where you and your guests feel welcome. Order in, set up a buffet, or just place the dishes or platters in the center of the table. Guests can serve themselves but it’s up to you to set the mood. Do what you can and don’t be overly ambitious. You should enjoy it as much as your guests do!
For impromptu gatherings, what are a few of the “must-have” items a host should have in his/her pantry at all times?
In your freezer, it’s always good to have packaged vegetables, samosas (from Audrey Peter at House of Audrey), various cuts of steak, chicken, soup and, of course, chilled vodka. In your fridge, keep white wine, champagne, salad ingredients (lettuce, tomatoes, spring onions, garlic shallots) and a squeeze bottle of freshly made salad dressing. An assortment of cheeses in different textures – a chevre, a creamy cheese like Brie, a hard cheese like Parmesan and a pungent cheese such as Stilton or Gorgonzola .
Your book is full of beautifully dressed tables. Where should we shop for elegant yet affordable glassware, tableware and linens?
In New York, I love the shop Global Table ( 107-109 Sullivan Street, 212-431-5839). Coming this spring, my new entertaining collection for HSN is full of elegant yet well priced tableware in fresh colors.
Sending a handwritten thank you note is a simple yet appreciated gesture. Who are your favorite stationers?
Two of the best stores are Kate’s Paperie and Papyrus.
Your gift closet is legendary. If we invited you over for dinner, what might you bring us?
I might bring a fragrant candle from Seda France, a bottle of Veuve Clicquot (orange label), a gourmet set of olive oil and vinegar, a copy of my favorite book or a great throw. Maybe even my favorite cocktail along with the recipe so you can make it at home!
