Natural Beauty

In the late ’80s, hairstylist John Masters found the business of beauty had become a dirty job. Toxins known to be carcinogenic or harmful such as parabens, phthalate, petroleum and coal tar derivatives were regularly found in hair care and skincare products in the United States.

Having personally embraced the organic lifestyle meant that Masters had to find a way to avoid harsh chemicals not only at home but at the salon. His quest led him to go out on his own and create his first organic product, Dry Hair Nourishment and Defrizzer.

“I started my line by going back to basics and finding time-tested recipes that included all natural ingredients, “ said Masters. “Why use products with cheap chemical substitutes for organic compounds that work so much better?”

Today, John Masters Organics is considered the only luxury organic, salon-developed hair care and skincare line. Packaged in glass and PET plastic that is recyclable, the products contain a minimum of 65% organic ingredients, some with close to 100%.

Best sellers include his lavender rosemary shampoo, herbal cider hair clarifier and pomegranate facial nourishing oil. Masters has even created an organic dog wash called Dogpoo made with eucalyptus and tea tree (no doubt, inspired by his beloved canine companion, Maya). In the works is a new moisture hair mask with organic seaweed that will launch later this year.

Stylish green girls looking to primp before the party can head to the John Masters Organics salon, the only “clean-air” salon in New York that does not perform services (such as perms, bleaching or manicures) which require toxic chemicals. All colors are ammonia-free herbal and clay-based. And, those with addictions to weekly blowouts can indulge - the salon is powered by 100% wind energy.

John Masters Organics is located at 77 Sullivan Street between Spring and Broome. To make an appointment at the salon, call 212-343-9590. To purchase products, visit www.johnmasters.com.
